In August of 2004, the MacCulloch Dancers travelled to Scotland with the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band. Edinburgh is a beautiful and historic city. We enjoyed great theatre, historic tours, such as, Mary's Coves and great food. A favourite meal stop was the “Standing Order”. On two occasions, the pipe band and dancers performed for the Caledonian Breweries. Before the second performance, the band's lead drummer Andy Main and Heather Forbes choreographed a drum and step dance production, which featured the rhythmic sounds of the drummer's beats and step dancers tapping. It was hence named “The Caledonian Drum Call” and was performed for the breweries of the same namesake. Highlights on our performance list were the Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle. The beautiful backgrounds and acoustics in the castle venues made the performances a magical experience. Our music and dance had found a home. Large crowds drew to watch, as our Canadian pipe band and dancers celebrated Scotland's Heritage. It was a moving experience to see our pipe band march through the arches of Edinburgh castle - the sounds of the pipes and drums resounding through the cobble stone streets. Busking on Princess Street with the beautiful historic buildings in the background was another stirring experience. Once again, large crowds gathered to cheer for the Canadians, energizing our dancers and musicians. Throughout the week, the backdrops of cobble stone walkways and large stone buildings enhanced the beautiful colours of our Canadian red and white and Scotland's tartans. Although a little hard on the shins, the cobble stone streets made for crisp clear sounds from our step dancers feet. We would like to thank the Sons of Scotland for this wonderful opportunity. Also, thanks goes out to George Muggleton for his energetic fiddling. As always, he was a big plus point in our show.
