MacCulloch Dancers in Mexico - 2003

Story by: Rae MacCulloch

November 3rd, 2003

We have travelled the world but there is something about the people of Mexico that makes us want to return time after time. This was our third visit to Mexico and it was an adventure that will stand out in our memories for a long time.

The festival took place in Coahuila which is located in the North Eastern part of Mexico. Our first performance was in the city of Saltillo, the capital of Coahuila.

It was a successful start to a joyous week in Mexico.

A memorable day was the performance at the local high school. Throughout the concert, there were loud cheers and applause that ended with a standing ovation. Following the concert, the group spent time signing autographs, shaking hands and handing out souvenir Canadian pins. To be so accepted by your peers was evident in the smiling faces of everyone involved.

Each day we travelled to a new city 8 in all. Because of the great distance between venues we spent anywhere from 2 1/2 to 4 hours on the bus. The bus was comfortable and was equipped with a VCR. Our congenial bus driver, Silvester provided us with movies and was always willing to stop at Oxxo convenient stores to let us stock up on junk food. Oxxo soon became a land mark in each city we visited.

On arrival in the town of Zaragoza, we were met by Mayor Arg. Saul Vara Rivera. We were later invited to his ranch where he and his staff prepared a delicious barbecue. This was followed by a social hour of Mexican music and dance. Following our evening performance, this gracious mayor joined us for supper and then took us for a walk through his town. The Municipality is celebrating its 250th anniversary. .
